Additional information

Essai pieces produced by the Monnaie de Paris in this period were official trial strikes submitted for administrative approval before a design entered full production — or, in many cases, never did. This particular issue never circulated; France's 50-franc denomination in 1970 was already occupied by the gold Hercules type, leaving copper-nickel essais of this value largely without a practical mandate. Most were distributed to collectors and monetary institutions rather than released through banking channels.
