The Pathet Lao, the communist movement that would eventually absorb the Royal Lao Government in 1975, issued its own parallel currency for decades before gaining full national control. These notes circulated in zones under Pathet Lao administration — effectively a liberated-areas currency functioning alongside, and in competition with, the Royal Kip issued from Vientiane. After the 1975 takeover the series remained in use through the transitional period before the Liberation Kip system was consolidated.
