Issued to mark the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit, held in Vientiane in November 2012 — the first time Laos had hosted the gathering. ASEM, founded in 1996, brings together heads of state from across the EU and Asia, and Laos used the occasion to signal its growing diplomatic presence under ASEAN chairmanship that same year. Collector issues tied to specific ASEM summits are produced in small, host-nation runs and rarely see wide international distribution.
