Georgia's third series of lari notes, introduced from 1999 onward, was designed following the currency's rocky debut after the catastrophic hyperinflation that destroyed the coupon — the transitional currency the country used after independence before the lari was introduced in 1995. The 50 lari sat at the upper-middle denomination of everyday commerce and saw heavy use across the series' long print run.

Pick 73 was eventually succeeded by a redesigned issue with enhanced security, the older notes demonetized on a rolling schedule as the National Bank progressively tightened counterfeit resistance. The security thread on this emission is a basic windowed type — notably modest by the standards of contemporary regional issues from Turkey or Russia.
