| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a collage of multiple historical Taiwan coins of various denominations arranged across the field, showcasing the numismatic history of the New Taiwan Dollar over fifty years. Coins of differing sizes overlap one another, with visible portrait effigies and Chinese legends on their surfaces. A Chinese legend arcs along the upper periphery reading '中華民國八十八年' (Republic of China Year 88). The overall composition serves as a tribute to the evolution of Taiwanese coinage from 1949 to 1999. |

Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the New Taiwan Dollar, which was introduced in June 1949 as a currency reform measure following the catastrophic hyperinflation that had destroyed the Old Taiwan Dollar — itself a replacement for Japanese colonial-era yen. The NT Dollar launched at a conversion rate of 40,000 old dollars to one new dollar, a ratio that captures just how thoroughly the postwar monetary situation had collapsed.
