Additional information

Issued as part of the FAO coinage program, which the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization promoted across dozens of developing nations in the late 1960s and 1970s as a vehicle for agricultural awareness. Zambia's participation came just five years after independence from Britain, during the early years of Kenneth Kaunda's presidency and a period of genuine optimism about the country's economic future — copper revenues were still strong, and Zambia briefly ranked among Africa's higher-income nations.

The FAO series gave newly independent states a politically useful format: internationally sponsored, yet nationally branded.
