| Reverse description | A split-perspective composition depicting the yellow autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Boaty McBoatface in the foreground as seen from an underwater vantage point, while the upper portion of the design transitions to an above-water view of the Antarctic seascape, featuring the bow section of the Royal Research Ship RRS Sir David Attenborough. The coloured design conveys the dual operational environment of the vessel and its submersible. Inscriptions identify the subjects and denomination around and within the field. |

| Additional information |
The name "Boaty McBoatface" originated in a 2016 public naming poll run by the Natural Environment Research Council for a new £200 million Royal Research Ship. The internet voted overwhelmingly for the joke submission — over 124,000 votes — and the resulting embarrassment prompted NERC to name the ship RRS Sir David Attenborough instead, consoling the public by assigning the name to one of the vessel's bright yellow remotely operated submarines. The British Antarctic Territory, a UK overseas territory with no permanent civilian population, issues coins largely for collector revenue rather than circulation.
