Pobjoy Mint has held a long-running license to strike coins for several British Overseas Territories and smaller dependencies, and the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands series has been among their more sustained wildlife programs. The Macaroni Penguin is native to those islands — the breeding population on South Georgia is one of the largest in the world, numbering in the millions — which gives the issue legitimate geographic grounding rather than the opportunistic wildlife theming that plagues much of the commemorative market.
The colored diamond-finish variant was produced in deliberately limited numbers alongside the standard strike, KM#33.1 distinguishing it from the uncolored issue in the series.
