Cuba's post-Soviet economic collapse forced a prolonged dual-currency experiment that lasted well into the 2000s. These notes circulated alongside the convertible peso (CUC) introduced in 1994, but for ordinary Cubans paid in moneda nacional, the 50-peso denomination represented a significant sum — roughly a third of a typical monthly state salary during this period.

The series ran across several years with only minor variation between dates, making precise year attribution dependent on careful examination of the printed date rather than any design change.
