Obverse description The obverse is laid out in a symmetrical design with the bank title El Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires arched across the centre within an ornate cartouche, enclosing the large numeral 50. Four circular vignettes occupy the corners: a sailing ship at upper left, an agricultural scene with figures and livestock at upper right, a riverside scene at lower left, and a rural landscape at lower right. The denomination CINCUENTA PESOS FUERTES is set within a decorative panel at centre, with the place and date of issue Buenos Aires Julio 1 de 1865 and serial number appearing in the upper portion, alongside the word CINCUENTA repeated in guilloche-bordered panels on each side.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in a single olive-green tone, dominated by a large central guilloche rosette incorporating the numeral 50, flanked by the word CINCUENTA repeated in curved letterpress panels to the left and right. The overall design relies heavily on lathe-work geometric patterns filling the entire field, with no pictorial vignettes. Archive stamps of the Banco de la Prov. de Bs. As. Archivo Histórico appear in the upper right and lower left corners, along with manuscript notations.

Comments

The Banco de la Província de Buenos Aires operated as a quasi-central bank for the province well before Argentina had any unified national banking system, and the 1865 emission came during a period of acute fiscal strain driven partly by Argentine involvement in the War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay. The province was financing war expenditure through note issues rather than specie, which meant these higher denominations circulated under persistent convertibility doubts.

ABNC's New York plates for this series are notably fine work for the period. The company had been producing Buenos Aires provincial paper since the 1850s and retained the contracts through multiple political administrations.

PS#468 survivors are scarce; the 50 Pesos Fuertes denomination saw real commercial use rather than casual small-transaction handling, and attrition rates were high.
