The Bank of Sudan's 1987 note issues came during a period of acute fiscal pressure — the country was carrying one of the heaviest debt burdens in sub-Saharan Africa, and the Central Bank was managing exchange controls that effectively created a parallel market rate several times the official one. The 50 Piastres, fractional by this point in real purchasing terms, was already marginal as a circulating denomination.
Pick 38 belongs to the transitional series before Sudan's currency reforms of the early 1990s accelerated the shift away from the pound system entirely.
