The 1997 series marked a significant redesign for Botswana's higher denominations, with De La Rue overhauling the visual language of the pula notes during a period of sustained economic growth driven by diamond revenues. Mogae's signature here predates his presidency — he was serving as Minister of Finance and Development Planning before succeeding Masire in 1998, making this one of the few notes to carry his pre-presidential authorization.
