Azerbaijan redenominated its currency in 2006, replacing the old manat at a rate of 5,000 to 1 following years of inflation tied to post-Soviet economic instability. The qapik coins that followed were designed as a stable, functional coinage for a country whose oil revenues were finally bringing macroeconomic order. This 2021 issue is a late continuation of that series, effectively unchanged from the original KM#44 type introduced after redenomination.
