South Ossetia has no recognized central bank with independent minting authority — these issues are produced for the collector market, not circulation, and their status as legal tender is nominal at best. Russia has used the rouble as South Ossetia's de facto currency since 2008, making a locally denominated copper-nickel piece functionally redundant from the moment of striking.
