| Reverse description | The reverse presents a vignette of the Özgön architectural complex, comprising a minaret and mausoleum, among the most significant surviving monuments along the Great Silk Road in Kyrgyzstan. The structures are rendered in fine line-work against a guilloche underprint with the denomination repeated in Cyrillic script. The composition conveys the historical and cultural heritage of the medieval period. |

Kyrgyzstan introduced its national currency, the som, in May 1993 — less than two years after independence — replacing the Russian ruble at a time when hyperinflation across the former Soviet space was accelerating. The 1994-dated notes of this series represent the second wave of som issues, filling denominations needed for practical daily transactions once the initial release proved insufficient for the range of prices then in circulation.
The watermark is the sole security feature, modest even by early-1990s standards. The printing contract for this series went to Harrison and Sons of England.
