Reverse description A large humpback whale is depicted in high relief in the lower portion of the field, breaching through stylized ocean waves, its body oriented toward the right with its distinctive fluted tail flukes visible at the lower right. In the upper right field, a fully-rigged three-masted sailing ship under full sail rides the same waves. The legend PROTECT OUR WORLD curves along the upper periphery in bold raised Latin lettering, while the denomination 50 VATU appears in the lower exergue.

Vanuatu's "Protect our World" series emerged from the early 1990s wave of environmental commemoratives that flooded the collector market — many of questionable relevance to their issuing nations. Vanuatu, at least, had standing: the archipelago's marine ecosystems and biodiversity were already drawing international scientific attention by this period, and the Reserve Bank issued selectively enough that the series didn't saturate.

KM#17 is one of the harder dates to locate among the Vanuatu silver commemoratives of this run.
