Comments

Uruguay's 500,000 Nuevos Pesos was issued as hyperinflation gutted the purchasing power of the currency introduced just a decade earlier. The Nuevo Peso had replaced the original Peso in 1975 at 1,000:1; by the time this note was printed, even that redenomination had been lapped by inflation, and denominations of this magnitude were a practical necessity for routine transactions. Within a year of this note's issue, Uruguay redenominated again — the Peso Uruguayo replaced the Nuevo Peso at 1,000:1 in 1993, rendering this denomination obsolete almost immediately.
