Comments

The Banque de la République du Burundi was established in 1964 following independence, replacing the currency arrangements inherited from the Belgian Congo monetary zone. This 500 Francs series ran across an unusually long window — over a decade — during a period when Burundi's economy remained heavily dependent on coffee export revenues, which made the franc's purchasing power vulnerable to commodity price swings rather than domestic monetary policy.

Notes from the early dates in this range show more pronounced handling wear than the later printings, consistent with limited reorder quantities and extended recirculation of existing stock.
