The Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Équatoriale Française et du Cameroun was established in 1955 as France began restructuring its monetary arrangements in equatorial Africa ahead of decolonization — a process that would render this issuing authority obsolete within a few years. The 500 Francs P#33 belongs to a transitional window between the older Caisse Centrale de la France d'Outre-Mer issues and the post-independence BEAC system that followed.

Printed by the Banque de France in Paris, these notes circulated across a currency zone spanning Chad, Gabon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, and Cameroon simultaneously. The CFA Franc peg to the French franc was fixed at 1:2 at the time of issue.
