| Obverse description | Central field features the arms of Cameroon: a shield bearing scales of justice surmounted by a five-pointed star, flanked by crossed fasces, all supported by a decorative cartouche. The bilingual country name REPUBLIC OF CAMEROON and REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN appears in an arc beneath the arms. The upper legend REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN runs along the rim, with the national motto PAIX TRAVAIL PATRIE / PEACE WORK FATHERLAND in smaller lettering above the shield. The denomination 500 FRANCS CFA is inscribed in bold relief along the lower portion of the field. The textured background provides contrast to the polished relief elements. |

Cameroon's early 21st-century commemorative program was largely driven by foreign minting houses — principally operating through licensing arrangements — targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation. These pieces never saw a Cameroonian bank counter.
The Cancer issue is one of twelve in the zodiac series struck for Cameroon during this period, all sharing the same planchet specification.
