Angola's 500 Kwanza notes of this period circulated during one of the most destructive phases of the civil war, when the MPLA government's Soviet-backed economy was hemorrhaging foreign exchange and the kwanza was already well on its way to collapse. Inflation had been eroding purchasing power since independence in 1975, and by the mid-1980s even large denominations were rapidly losing practical utility.
The P#120 series spans three issue years, a range that reflects both the pace of wear in wartime circulation and the limited print runs each year could sustain.
