Issued to mark the centenary of the Romanian Patriarchate, established in 1925 when the Romanian Orthodox Church was elevated to patriarchal rank following the country's post-WWI territorial expansion and the unification of regional Orthodox jurisdictions under a single primatial see. The elevation was granted by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and reflected both the demographic weight of Romanian Orthodoxy and considerable political pressure from Bucharest.
