The 500 Lempiras denomination was introduced by the Banco Central de Honduras as the country's highest face value note, a response to sustained inflationary pressure through the late 1980s and 1990s that progressively eroded the purchasing power of lower denominations. Honduras never experienced hyperinflation on the scale of its regional neighbors, but the lempira lost substantial ground nonetheless, and the 500 note filled a practical gap in daily high-value transactions.

The fifteen-year print run under P#78 is notably long for a single Pick listing, spanning multiple security revisions that can be distinguished by thread placement and watermark clarity — useful for dating individual examples without relying on series letters alone.
