Additional information

Struck to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Turkish Republic, founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on October 29, 1923. The 1973 commemorative gold series was issued in multiple denominations, all sharing the anniversary theme — this 500 Lira being among the mid-tier pieces in that set. Turkey had not issued circulating gold coinage for decades by this point; these were purpose-struck collector pieces from the outset, which largely explains the survival rate in uncirculated condition.
