Additional information

World Food Day was established by the FAO in 1979 and first observed on October 16, 1981 — the anniversary of the organization's founding in 1945. Cyprus was among the early nations to mark the occasion with a commemorative issue, reflecting the island's postwar reliance on agricultural exports, particularly citrus, as a primary driver of economic recovery after the 1974 Turkish invasion had displaced roughly a third of its population and severed access to the fertile Mesaoria plain.
