Obverse description Central vignette is an intaglio portrait of José Gervasio Artigas (1764–1850), founding father and national hero of Uruguay, positioned at right of centre against a fine guilloche underprint. The national Coat of Arms of Uruguay appears to the left. The inscription ARTIGAS is printed beneath the portrait, with the denomination N$500 repeated in the corners and the full legend QUINIENTOS NUEVOS PESOS MONEDA NACIONAL across the lower register.

Reverse description The reverse carries a vignette of the Estévez Palace (Palacio Estévez), the former seat of government situated on Plaza Independencia in Montevideo, rendered in intaglio against a multicolour guilloche underprint.
