Bank of China's entry into Macanese note issuance came relatively late — the branch only gained the right to issue currency alongside the long-established Banco Nacional Ultramarino in 1995, following negotiations tied to the handover process and China's preparations for assuming sovereignty over the territory in December 1999. The 500 pataca denomination was the highest value in circulation at the time, making this a commercially significant rather than incidental addition to the series.
The 2002–2003 date range corresponds to a second printing run. Pick 99B distinguishes it from the initial 1995–1996 issues primarily through signature combinations reflecting personnel changes at the branch.
