The Georgian Democratic Republic's 1919 note series was produced under genuinely precarious conditions — the country had declared independence from the collapsing Russian Empire in May 1918 and was simultaneously managing border conflicts with Armenia and Azerbaijan while trying to establish functioning monetary infrastructure from scratch. These early issues were locally printed, as access to established European security printers was neither reliable nor fast enough given the political circumstances.

Georgian independence lasted until February 1921, when the Red Army invaded. Notes from this series had a circulation window of roughly two years before Soviet currency displaced them entirely.
