| Additional information |
Tajikistan declared independence from the Soviet Union in September 1991, though the celebration was almost immediately overtaken by a civil war that lasted until 1997 and killed an estimated 50,000 people. The Somoni itself wasn't introduced until 2000, replacing the Russian ruble at a rate of 1,000 to one after years of currency collapse.
The 30th anniversary prompted a coordinated series of commemorative issues from the National Bank, of which this 500 Somoni piece represents the highest face-value denomination — a figure that, given Tajikistan's persistent position as Central Asia's poorest economy, exists purely in the ceremonial register.
