Venice issued no currency in 2014 — it has not been a sovereign state since Napoleon ended the Republic in 1797. This note is a modern commemorative or fantasy piece, produced for the Venetian independence movement that held an unofficial referendum in March 2014. That vote, organized online by pro-secession activists, claimed roughly 89% support for independence from Italy, generating considerable press before being dismissed by Rome as legally meaningless.

The hologram is a nod to anti-counterfeiting credibility the note does not legally require. It never circulated as currency and was never intended to.
