Additional information

The Juan Fernández archipelago sits roughly 670 kilometers off the Chilean coast and is better known internationally as the real-world location behind Alexander Selkirk's marooning — the episode that directly inspired Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. Selkirk was stranded there from 1704 to 1709. Chile has administered the islands since 1877, and their remoteness has kept the endemic flora and fauna distinct enough to earn UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 1977.

Silver-plated issues in this Chilean commemorative series are produced for the collector market rather than circulation, with the plating applied over copper-nickel rather than a solid silver flan.
