Additional information

Mongolia issued this piece in 2005 as part of a broader series celebrating Asian sporting traditions, timed loosely to coincide with renewed Mongolian interest in Japanese sumo — not surprising given that Mongolian wrestlers had begun dominating the top divisions of professional sumo around that period. Asashoryu Akinori, the first Mongolian yokozuna, achieved that rank in 2003, triggering genuine national pride and a commercial market for sumo-themed Mongolian collectibles.

The rectangular oval format — 60 × 40 mm — places this firmly in the large-format novelty silver category produced heavily by the Mongolian mint during the 2000s for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation.
