Not a currency instrument in any functional sense — this is a solidarity scrip issued by the underground Solidarność printing network during the period when the union operated outside the law following the imposition of martial law in December 1981. The 1980 date refers to the founding of the union, not the print run; most clandestine Solidarność paper items were produced through the 1982–1989 period using covert offset presses hidden from the ZOMO and SB.
Zbigniew Bujak led the Warsaw regional underground after internment began, evading capture until 1986. Notes bearing his image functioned as political ephemera and fundraising tools, circulated among sympathizers rather than in any commercial exchange. The Polish communist authorities treated possession of such material as evidence of illegal organization.
