Norges midlertidige Rigsbank — "Norway's Temporary State Bank" — was established in 1814 following the dissolution of the union with Denmark and the drafting of the Kiel Treaty. It was an emergency institution by design, created to provide Norway with a functioning monetary system almost from nothing. The 6 Rigsbankskilling is among the smallest denominations it issued, intended for everyday transactions at a moment when coin shortages made even minor paper fractionals necessary.

The embossed stamp was the primary authenticity control — a modest but practical choice for a printer operating locally in Christiania with limited access to the sophisticated intaglio equipment used by established European note printers. The bank was wound down by 1816 when Norges Bank was chartered to replace it.
