Reverse description The reverse displays the crowned Royal Arms of Spain as used on Spanish colonial coinage of the Ferdinand VII era, struck at the Mexico City Mint. At centre is the quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile and the lions of León, with the Bourbon fleur-de-lis escutcheon at the fess point. The shield is flanked on either side by the Pillars of Hercules, each entwined with a banner bearing the motto PLUS VLTRA, symbolising Spain's dominion beyond the Straits of Gibraltar. The surrounding legend reads HISPAN · ET IND · REX · Mo · 8R · J · J, identifying the coin as an 8 Reales struck for the King of Spain and the Indies at the Mexico City Mint. The whole is surmounted by an open royal crown.
