Additional information

Portugal's mid-century coinage reforms left its Atlantic island territories in chronic small-change shortages, and the countermark system was the pragmatic answer. Existing Portuguese silver was restruck with crown punches under royal authority to revalidate or redenominate circulation stock without the expense of a full mint run. Pedro V had been on the throne barely two years when this issue was authorized — he was nineteen years old.

The Gomes P5.19 attribution places this among a tightly documented series, but surviving examples with clean, well-centered crown punches are genuinely scarce.
