| Additional information |
Faustin Soulouque, a former slave who rose through Haiti's military ranks, declared himself Emperor Faustin I in 1849 after initially being installed as president by senators who believed he would be easy to manipulate. He was not. This bronze issue belongs to the short coinage program of his empire, which lasted until a military revolt drove him into exile in January 1859. The fractional denomination reflects Haiti's attempt to maintain a functional small-change economy during a period of chronic monetary instability and near-total isolation from European credit markets.
