Additional information

Carlos III's Guatemalan gold was struck at the Santiago de los Caballeros mint during a period of significant administrative restructuring under Bourbon reform policies. The Casa de Moneda de Guatemala operated under persistent pressure from Madrid to standardize output and reduce the chronic short-weight complaints that had plagued colonial mints for decades. Guatemala's 8 escudos from this window are notably scarcer than contemporary Mexican or Peruvian issues — the mint's production capacity was simply smaller, and surviving examples with full dates and mint assayer initials are harder to attribute than their documentation suggests.
