| Obverse description | Central device depicts five volcanic mountain peaks rising from the sea, surmounted by a radiant sun emitting long straight rays that fill the upper field, representing the five states of the Central American federation. The design is enclosed within a plain inner circle. The circular legend REPUBLICA DEL CENTRO DE AMERICA arcs around the upper periphery, while the date 1833 appears in the lower field between two dots. The coin is struck on a broad flan with a reeded border. |

The Federal Republic of Central America was already fracturing politically by the time these coins were being struck at the Casa de Moneda in San José — Guatemala had effectively gone its own way, and the federation's authority over its member states was increasingly theoretical. Costa Rica operated with considerable autonomy in practice, and its mint continued producing gold coinage even as the republic dissolved around it, ceasing formally in 1838.
Dies for this series are known to show significant clashing and reuse across the emission period, a product of limited skilled engravers in the region.
