Reverse description The reverse displays the crowned Pillars of Hercules flanking a central quartered shield, with undulating waves at the base representing the seas between the Old and New Worlds, in accordance with the standard macuña type for colonial Bolivian coinage of Charles III. The denomination numeral '8' appears at the upper left of the shield, with the assayer's initial 'V' and the mint mark 'P' (for Potosí) distributed in the quarters of the cross. The date is partially visible within the design, and the abbreviated motto 'PLVS VLTRA' is distributed across the field. The overall strike is irregular and characteristic of the hand-struck cob (macuña) technique, with portions of the design off-flan.
