Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of King Charles III facing right, rendered in high relief in the neoclassical portrait style introduced for the milled coinage series. The king's hair is tied at the back with a ribbon and adorned with a laurel wreath, with flowing curls visible behind the ear and over the shoulder. The truncation of the bust is broad, showing the king in armor partially covered by a draped mantle secured at the shoulder with an oval brooch. The circular Latin legend · CAROLUS · III · DEI · GRATIA · encircles the effigy, with the mint date 1773 placed in the lower exergual area. The entire design is contained within a toothed or reeded border.
