The Gambia gained independence from Britain in 1965 but retained Elizabeth II as head of state until becoming a republic in 1970 — the precise year this proof was struck. The 8-shilling denomination reflects the transitional monetary system then in use, before decimalization replaced shillings with the butut-based dalasi in 1971.
The proof issue KM#7a was produced in very small numbers for collector sets marking that republican transition, making it considerably scarcer than the base-metal circulation counterpart.
