José I's reign saw the Marquis of Pombal exercise near-total control over Portuguese economic policy, and the coinage reforms of the late 1760s were entirely his program. The 80 Réis denomination in silver was part of a broader rationalisation of the currency following the catastrophic 1755 Lisbon earthquake, which had devastated the mint's infrastructure and disrupted production for years.
Bentes lists two distinct varieties across this four-year window, suggesting at least one die revision during the run — not unusual given Pombal's documented interventions in mint administration.
