Reverse description A serpent coiling sinuously to the right around an omphalos (sacred navel stone), the primary symbol associated with the healing cult of Asclepius. An owl stands to the left behind the omphalos, referencing the civic iconography of Pergamon. The Greek legend ΑΣΚΛΗΠΙΟΥ to the right and ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ to the left of the central device reads 'of Asclepius the Saviour,' a divine epithet reflecting the god's role as healer and protector.
