| Obverse description | Central field bears the Islamic shahada inscription in Arabic script, arranged in two lines within a plain or beaded border. The legends read 'La ilaha illa Allah / Muhammad rasul Allah' (There is no god but God / Muhammad is the messenger of God). The script is rendered in a somewhat crude, informal hand consistent with early Ottoman hammered coinage. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, typical of hand-struck silver of this period. No figurative imagery is present, in accordance with Islamic artistic convention. |
