Additional information

Selim I took the throne in 1512 after forcing the abdication of his father Bayezid II — the only Ottoman sultan ever removed from power by his own son. Within months, Selim had also executed his brothers and nephews to eliminate rival claims, a brutality that cleared the path for his relentless military campaigns into Safavid Persia and Mamluk Egypt. The akçe issued at his accession entered circulation at the precise moment the empire began its most rapid territorial expansion in a single reign.

By the end of Selim's eight years on the throne, the Ottoman treasury had tripled in size, largely from Mamluk spoils.
