The Arverni were the dominant Gallic tribe of the Auvergne region and had produced Vercingetorix, the chieftain who led the great coalition against Caesar in 52 BC. The defeat at Alesia that year effectively ended organized Gaulish resistance, and bronze issues like this one were struck in the decades of uncertain transition that followed — a period when tribal minting continued under increasing Roman administrative pressure before eventually collapsing altogether.
