Obverse description Frontal crowned bust of King Ousanas II, wearing an elaborate tiered crown adorned with multiple projections, set within a wreath formed by two wheat ears or palm fronds meeting at the top of the field. The royal effigy is rendered in the stylised Aksumite manner characteristic of late fifth- to early sixth-century gold coinage. A Greek legend reading ΟΥCΛϞA BΛCIΛЄΛC (King Ousanas) is distributed around the periphery of the coin outside the wreath border. The flan is irregular, as is typical of hammered Aksumite chrysoi of this period.
