Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before any British Royal Mint coinage bearing his effigy entered circulation, but the British North Borneo Chartered Company — a private commercial entity administering the territory under royal charter — moved independently and struck this piece during his brief reign. It is among the very few coins issued anywhere in the world to carry Edward VIII's name with legitimate contemporary authority. The Company had long operated its own currency largely outside the scrutiny that governed Crown dependencies closer to London.
