The effigy occupies the majority of the field in high relief. Zimbabwe issued this crown in 1984 as part of a series commemorating Edward VIII, the British king who abdicated in December 1936 after less than a year on the throne — never having been crowned. Southern Rhodesia, as a self-governing colony in 1936, had already prepared coinage dies bearing his portrait before the abdication rendered them obsolete. The 1984 issue revisits that unfinished numismatic chapter nearly five decades later.
